Frequently Asked Questions...

ecosolar offer a complete range of solar products utilising the latest in solar technology. We aim to answer any questions you have; here are some of the common questions we get asked:

Why Renewable Energy?
It is observed that the consumption of conventional energy sources has caused more environmental damage than any other human activity. Electricity generated from fossil fuels such as coal and crude oil has led to high concentrations of harmful gases in the atmosphere. This has in turn lead to many problems such as global warming. The energy sources such as the Sun, Wind, Geothermal, water, bio-mass etc can never be exhausted and therefore are labelled 'renewable'. They are sources, which are ecologically safe and almost infinite, or would replenish themselves within a human lifetime.

Why Solar Energy?
The Sun is the single largest source of energy for the entire solar system. In less than 1 hour of daylight, the sun releases upon the Earth the same amount of energy consumed by the entire population of the planet in 1 year! This energy is clean, it is renewable, it is free, it is abundant. This makes it one of the most promising alternatives to ourconventional energy sources.

What is Solar Water Heating? How does it work?
Solar Water Heating is a technology that uses solar energy to heat water. A solar water heater comprises of a blackened flat plate collector with associated metal tubing, facing the sun. The collector is provided with a transparent glass cover and a layer of thermal insulation beneath the plate. The collector tubing is connected by a pipe to an insulated tank that stores hot water during non sunny periods.

Basically it is a thermosiphon system which works on the principle that warm water rises, it is also known as 'natural convection'. As water in the collector heats, it becomes lighter and rises naturally into the tank above. Cold water flows from the bottom of the storage tank to the collector and is heated by rising the water from the collector.

Why Solar Water Heating?
After initial investment at the time of installation, there are no operating costs and very little maintenance; from day 1 it provides hot water free of charge. Whoever invests in a solar heating system is also investing in the future. In addition to financial gains, using a solar water heating system, one is actively contributing to the lowering of environmentally harmful COČ emissions and lengthening the future of our planet for generations to come.

Can the solar collector heat water high enough?
Generally the technology we sell is designed to provide a daily temperature rise of around 35-50oC in good weather conditions. However for industrial application systems designs can give any output up to 90oC.

What maintenance is required?
Under normal working conditions minimum or even no maintenance is required.

Does it work in winter?
The thermal and solar energy systems we supply are designed for our climate and work all year round.

What about planning permission?
This is usually considered a permitted development under town and country planning (general permitted development) Order 1995, and permission is not normally needed. If you live in a conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty permission may be required depending on the siting of the collectors.

How much does it cost?
Each system is designed individually and the price will depend on many aspects, such as size of cylinder, number of occupants in a home, number of bath or shower rooms, positioning of collectors and associated pipe runs. Contact Us to discuss your requirements in more detail.

Does it do central heating?
The system is designed for cost effective water heating and will not directly supply central heating. However a system can be designed for use with low temperature underfloor heating system. Please Contact Us for details.

How long does it last?
There is very little to deteriorate and you could expect a system to be working in 20-25 years time.

What if we move?
If you move home the collectors can be moved to your new home.
